Einstein : Cosmic Conspiracy and Cosmic Magic

Initially, a cosmic (not Einsteinian) conspiracy of the highest order made the speed of light gloriously constant:

Brian Greene: "If space and time did not behave this way, the speed of light would not be constant and would depend on the observer's state of motion. But it is constant; space and time do behave this way. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries, pp. 123-124: "If everyone, everywhere and at all times, is to measure the same speed for the beam from your imaginary spacecraft, a number of things have to happen. First of all, as the speed of your spacecraft increases, the length of everything - you, your measuring devices, your spacecraft - shortens in the direction of motion, as seen by everyone else. Furthermore, your own time slows down exactly enough so that when you haul out your newly shortened yardstick, you are guaranteed to be duped into measuring the same old constant value for the speed of light. Then cosmic magic became necessary. The traveling twin believes that, during the short turning-around period, a homogeneous gravitational field appears throughout all of the Universe. In this homogeneous gravitational field creatures age very fast. The further away from the traveling twin the creature is, the faster it ages. And that's what has happened to the stay-at-home twin. When the traveling twin returns, he sees that the homogeneous gravitational field from his dream actually did work - the stay-at-home twin is much older:

"For Adam to return back to Earth, he will eventually need to fire his rockets to turn around. When he fires his rockets, Adam will still continue to think that his spaceship is standing still. However, in order to believe that his spaceship is standing still, he needs to also believe that there is now a gravitational field present that is cancelling out the force from his rockets. Adam will believe that this gravitational field exists everywhere throughout all of space...Adam will believe that the gravitational field is causing time on Earth to flow much faster than time on his ship. It is only during this very brief moment when Adam is firing his rockets to turn around that he believes this external gravitational field is present...During the very brief moment when he fires his engines, he sees time on Earth flowing so extremely fast that this far more than compensates for the fact that he sees time on Earth flowing slowly during the rest of his journey. This is why Adam will believe that more time has passed for Sarah than for him when he returns."

He badly needed it because there was an Achilles heel in his 1905 paper:

Albert Einstein, On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies, 1905: "From this there ensues the following peculiar consequence. If at the points A and B of K there are stationary clocks which, viewed in the stationary system, are synchronous; and if the clock at A is moved with the velocity v along the line AB to B, then on its arrival at B the two clocks no longer synchronize, but the clock moved from A to B lags behind the other which has remained at B by tv^2/2c^2 (up to magnitudes of fourth and higher order), t being the time occupied in the journey from A to B." http://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/einstein/specrel/www/

No such "peculiar consequence" follows from Einstein's 1905 postulates (the principle of relativity and the principle of constancy of the speed of light). The postulates do not entail that the moving clock lags behind the stationary one, as Einstein fraudulently claims. Rather, the postulates, true or false, entail that EITHER clock lags behind the other, as judged from the other clock's system.

But there is a difference between the two clocks - the moving has a moment of acceleration while the stationary hasn't - which, if properly exploited, could one day convince the public that the "peculiar consequence", although non sequitur in special relativity, is still a valid conclusion in a more general theory involving acceleration and gravity. The 1905 Achilles heel was shielded. An annoying question (How was the slower-working clock distinguished in 1905, prior to acceleration and gravity coming on stage?) was still asked from time to time, but in the end the ideology became all-powerful and critics were silenced.
